What Nursing May Mean to the Student In the viewpoint of this writer/tutor, nursing is a scientifically based body of knowledge that encompasses all of the complex behaviors and practices necessary to aid individuals and the self in achieving the goal of maintaining an optimum level of health throughout the lifespan. In order to achieve this goal, nurses have to be thoroughly cognizant of the latest developments and innovations in medical practice. Delivery of healthcare services The delivery of services should be sufficiently comprehensive as to enable clients to achieve their personal goals concerning wellness. In other words, care should aid them in recovering from illness or injury, but also provide clients with the knowledge required to maintain health. This means that nurses recognize that every individual is an "open system," which includes "distinct, but integrated physiological, psychological and socio-cultural systems" (CSUB, 2006). For example, given a client who is diagnosed as having Type 2 diabetes, that individual needs education on how to control this chronic condition within the parameters of his or her life. Nursing intervention can show clients how to reestablish a balance in their lives in light of new experiences and new circumstances (CSUB).
