the various approaches to counseling and therapy that have been formulated and implemented since the advent of psychotherapy, which is concept first introduced by Freud. In the counseling practice that
I envision for my future is primarily based on the work of Alfred Adler, an intimate associate of Freud, who felt that human behavior is primarily motivated by a desire
on the part of individuals to achieve superiority (Holme, et al, 1972). In an Adlerian approach to counseling the focus is on helping to clients to generate feelings of "community
and connectedness with all life" and to give up feelings of "exaggerated inferiority," which people use in order compensate for not achieving a "fictional final goal of superiority over others"
(Stein and Edwards, 2003). This approach is thoroughly in keeping with the overall orientation of Christian counseling, which, likewise, helps clients to find connections and build a positive, spiritually-oriented orientation
towards life. Within this overall framework, principles adapted from Family Systems Theory, as well as Behaviorism and Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, will expand the "tools" available to the counselor in helping clients
