A personal paradigm is a frame of reference. It incorporates how we see the world and how we react within that world. It includes our values and beliefs about anything that we encounter. Initial paradigms are developed through our childhood. Royall (2000) wrote that people get a sense of how the world should be from their understanding of how the world is and this happens in childhood and adolescence. Each profession has its own paradigm that we each adopt when practicing in that profession. People live with two broad paradigms, professional and personal and if they collide, that person will suffer a great deal of emotional pain (Royall, 2000). Studying for any profession gives us the knowledge and skills we need but it also teaches us how to think in that profession. We see the world through that professions paradigms, now necessarily as the world really is. We can think of a paradigm as a brand, it is the brand of me. Paradigms change and evolve throughout our lives as the world changes or as changes occur in our part of the world and change is extremely stressful. We have seen this in leadership paradigms over the years as a result of changes in society, technology, politics, and so on.
