is adequate to measure the "attainment of content knowledge," many teachers feel that these measures, i.e., multiple choice tests, etc., do not demonstrate whether students have the ability to problem
solve and think critically. Therefore, many educators are turning to alternative assessment practices, which are also known as authentic assessment. Alternative assessment refers to strategies for student evaluation that are
performance based, such as rubrics, observation, portfolios and performance testing using real-word tasks (Moore, 2003). A positive assessment experience reported by Stefl-Mabry (2004) involved evaluating students comprehension of Newtons
Laws of Motion via an assessment strategy in which the students released three small toy cars down an inclined plane, with the students required to predict the consequences, i.e., which
car would finish first and why. The students applied the applicable scientific laws to this task, using a rubric prepared by the teacher (Stefl-Mabry, 2004). Similarly, the student researching this
topic should relate a personal experience with assessment. Perhaps, in writing his/her own paper, the student could write something like this: "In order to ascertain whether or not my students
had grasped the concepts inherent in the founding of the United States, my class staged a "Constitutional Convention," with students playing the roles of the Founding Fathers. Observation of how
the students fulfilled their role assignments indicated to me that the class lessons on this topic had, indeed, been largely successful. In regards to a negative experience, the work of
