my worldview was the idea that conditions in the U.S. are probably similar to conditions elsewhere. For example, I was enormously surprised to find that the mass transit system in
London is quite superior to subway system found in various American cities. Rather than finding Americans and American ways to be superior, my eyes were opened regarding the various ways
in which other nationalities are superior to my home culture and myself. This change in perspective began in 2002 when I stayed with my sister and her husband for
sixteen days in their home in London. I was little hesitant about taking the London subway, affectionately known as the "tube," to go shopping and sightseeing, but my fears soon
evaporated as the tube is literally light years ahead of what we have in the U.S. I am, likewise, an enthusiastic supporter of Londons famous red double-decker busses, even
though I twisted my ankle getting off of one. When this accident occurred, I was incredibly impressed by the reaction of other travelers, as several people stopped to help me
up and to inquire about whether or not I was hurt. Fortunately, I was more embarrassed than hurt, but I was very impressed by how polite and considerate the people
of London are. I had originally planned my trip to London for 2001, but delayed it when the terrorist attacks of 9/11 occurred. At that time, security into and
out of airports was extremely tight and I hesitated to travel because I thought my dark hair and olive complexion might cause me to be profiled by airport security as
possibly of Arab extraction. When I finally made the trip across the Atlantic, I flew on British Airways and the service was awesome, giving my first taste of the exquisite
