communication and writing now assert that the use of the word "I" is instrumental to effective communication in higher level writing, lending a narrative "objectivity and integrity" (McKinney 2010). The
use of personal narrative to reveal character is a rhetorical device with a great deal of precedence; it has been asked "what is incident but the illustration of character?" (Ramsdell
2012). Ultimately, a narrative in the first person can be just as compelling and informative as a formal dissertation, provided that it utilizes important rhetorical cues, such as appeals to
credibility (ethos), emotional content (pathos), and logical argument (logos) (Perkins 2008). My narrative will hopefully illustrate a key aspect of my character, which is that I am a resilient
individual with a strong will to overcome personal weakness and problems. Recently, I moved to a new state in order to start a new phase of my life. For the
most part, the move was amazing, and I fit very well into my new life in my new home; I quickly made friends, got to know the city, and generally
had an excellent time. However, there was one small problem... actually, the problem was only "small" in a relative subjective sense; to me, it was nearly overwhelming. The city I
moved to was known for being inhabited by a particular breed of giant cockroach that one is likely to encounter when one least expects it, stumbling into ones bathroom in
