self-help books and gurus of various kinds have taken the idea of goal-setting out of the realm of "touchy-feely stuff" and shown us how important it is to have a
plan for our lives. While its not necessary to have every day planned to the last detail for the next 25 years, we do need to have some idea of
an overall mission. Are we going to college or a technical field? Perhaps wed rather aim for a career in the performing arts; or join the military. Is there a
family in the future? Without some sort of plan, its likely that we will lurch from one phase to the next and not really get anywhere. Jim Collinss book
is an interesting exploration of a basic fact many people dont consider: companies, like people, have life cycles. Some companies last for six months, some for six years, some are
still in business a century after their founding. Why? This is what he explores in his book. Among other things, Collins argues that successful CEOs have to make sure their
organizations run smoothly; the companies have to have a set of "core values" which they retain literally forever; they have a core ideology that can change though the values do
not; they set "big hairy audacious goals" (like putting a man on the moon); they have a "cult like" corporate culture; they are not afraid to grow and evolve, and
try new things; the promote from within; they innovate constantly; and they "make the core ideology/values a reality" (Collins and Porras). When we bring these down to a personal level,
