others is not who they are, but why they have had so much influence. Biographical information on public figures is readily available, but only the student can explain why there
is a connection between them and the artist. The connection might not be obvious at first, and the student might not be an artist. But something about the work may
provide inspiration. In such a case, its possible that there is something similar in the work of all the artists. If thats the situation, the student could write something like
the following: I have found a lot of inspiration for my own work from three very different painters: Raphael, Cezanne and Turner. In "The School of Athens," Raphael shows us
a picture of a bustling square in which many of the great classical philosophers are engaged in debate. The picture influences me for several reasons. First, it is an excellent
study in composition. The buildings in the background dwarf the group in the foreground, but at the same time the architecture isnt threatening, but classically beautiful, and softened by the
glimpses of the sky we see through the windows. Raphael also repeats the image of the archway: we are looking at the philosophers through and arch, and there are two
more, growing progressively smaller in the distance. The shape is welcoming, like he is opening his arms and gathering the philosophers into a gentle embrace. He has also placed the
philosophers so that they are all at almost the same level. Its a quaint idea that no one is any more important than any of the others. Plato and Aristotle
are mingling with their friends without anyone being overly impressed by their presence. Finally, I love the idea of a bunch of the most famous philosophers in the world getting
