development can be the offshoot of desirable personality characteristics, like confidence, social integration and appropriate emotional curiosity, or can be a development of problematic personality traits that include insecurity, fear,
and problems with making emotional connections. It is not surprising that many of the great leaders of the world have been religious or spiritual individuals, nor is it surprising
that the same pursuit of spiritual and metaphysical knowledge can be attributed to mass murders, social deviants, and outcasts. It is easy to understand the attraction in pursuing knowledge of
those things that cannot be empirically proven, and there is security in placing knowledge outside of the self. Religion often serves as a means of placing emphasis on an
internal component (spirituality) through an external source (organized religion), and allows participants to defend their actions and choices through collective perspectives. Whether collectives are religiously-based or metaphysically designed (like
the groups of individuals sharing common beliefs in the supernatural), the behaviors of individuals are often related through the acceptable notions that are presented within the group, and may
or may not challenge the norms of society. For example, cult participation, whether metaphysical or spiritual in design, pushes individuals into compliance with the basic tenets of the group,
and acceptability and participation are both inherent to the capacity to remain solidified. Individuals chose to participate because the group provides them with something that they might be missing:
