system, art, and culture. Without the sum total of these disparate sources of influence, I would not be the person I am today. This paragraph helps the student answer the
first of the biographical questions. Growing up, my family was a major influence on me. While I am an only child, I grew up in close proximity to several aunts
and uncles, all of whom had children just slightly older than me. Consequently, I played with these cousins virtually every day and regarded them more as older siblings than distant
relatives. Over time, now that Im an adult, I find that I talk to them less, often going months between speaking to them. However, this isnt due to any particular
animosity; research indicates that as people age into adults, their interaction with "distant relatives such as cousins" diminishes significantly, even as interactions with close relatives such as parents remain relatively
unchanged (Leigh, 1982). Despite the fact that I no longer directly interact with them so often, I still feel as if the influence from growing up with them during my
formative years continues on. For instance, I still retain a fairly strong sense of identification with my family, perhaps more so than my other friends my age. Perhaps part
of the reason that I was able to get along so well with my extended family instead of feeling a sense of competition with them is that I was able
to carve out a meaningful social niche to occupy within the family dynamic; I was always "the smart one". While the rest of my family did fairly well at school,
I was able to excel academically all throughout elementary school, to the extent that I received all As, was placed into accelerated learning programs, and so on. More so than
