The manner in which an individuals fate in life can be affected by their family has always fascinated me. As I look at my life, the life of a successful middle class black female, I realize that I have many to thank. I am, after all, not solely responsible for my successes. Instead I owe deep debts of gratitude to my mother and to my maternal grandmother. Without either of these women I am certain that my life would be much different than it is today. I was raised in a single parent home by my mother. My grandmother, however, was an ever present force in my life. Both of these women, in fact, share equally in the contributions they have made to my life. My grandmother raised three children single-handedly off the meager wages she earned in a factory sewing on the soles of shoes. Each of her children managed to rise above their meager beginnings and to take their place in life in much more comfortable positions that that my grandmother was able to wrangle out. My grandmother had little education in the formal sense yet she had overwhelming common sense. She learned to appreciate the importance of education from her own lack of education. As a consequence, she emphasized the importance of education to each of her children and, in turn, to each of her grandchildren.
