and literature, as it encompasses the goals of establishing a solid sense of identity and self-worth, which is associated with personal happiness. We are all concerned with these goals and pattern our lives around behaviors that are intended to achieve them. The approach to counseling developed by psychologist Carl Rogers proposes that it is how an individual understands his or her own experiences that is significant, rather than the interpretation of those experiences developed by a therapist. This approach differed radically from the Freudian precepts that preceded Rogers humanistic approach to therapy (Holme, et al 442). Rogers theory of personality development is based on the idea that there is a built-in motivation present in every human being that compels that person to develop his or her gift to the "fullest extent possible" (Boeree). In other words, Rogers feels that all living things have an innate desire to strive towards the peak of their potential. As with his fellow psychologist Abraham Maslow, Rogers was interested in the factors that describe a fully functioning, healthy individual. Rogers indicates that a healthy individual is open to new experiences; lives in the present; is guided by trust, in others and in themselves; has experiential freedom and takes responsibility for his or her choices and is creative (Boeree). On the other hand, there are numerous other psychological perspectives and models that also address personality development and the ways in which self actualization can be described. For example, Maslows model of human development, Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, describes people as, first of all, being compelled to obtain their basic physiological needs as their fundamental priority.
