fascinating than the human drama. In this case, the student wants to discuss the impact of a serious illness on her life. After organizing her thoughts, she might consider something
like the following. I thought that being a single mom at a young age was tough; and I was convinced that adjusting to life in a big city after
a small town was really difficult. But nothing prepared me for the shock I got when my father was diagnosed with cancer. It turned my life completely upside down. I
guess, like most men, my dad didnt want to admit that he was having trouble of any kind, so he ignored the symptoms of illness, telling himself that everything was
basically okay and the pain and other problems he was having were nothing serious and would go away. Also, since I no longer live at home, I had no idea
he was so sick. The first I knew about it was a call from my Mom. She didnt give me any details over the phone, just said Dad was sick
and I should come home. I guess she thought she should break the news in person, but I was ready to scream by the time I got there. Ill never
understand why people dont give you the details when they first call. The trip was agony for me because I kept imagining the very worst: I thought he was dead
