Biological And Humanistic Perspectives of Personality Development
United Kingdom, October 2001. To Use This Report Correctly, There are many theories of the way in which a
person develops. This has been subject to debate for many years and there is still no overall consensus. Two schools of tough that have developed are those of the humanistic
and biological perspectives of personality development. If we look at these two perspective we can compare and contrast the different frameworks. With the humanist approach there is an emphasis on
health growth. The main thrust of this argument is that the other models can be seen as failing due to the way in which the other models, such as the
Psychodynamic do not provide a clear description of what they mean by health development. The followers of this school of thought include Carl Rogers, Fredrick Perls, Maslow and May. However,
the followers of the biological perspective such as Eysenck find this perspective unsatisfactory as an explanation for human development. The humanist perceptive does not have a defined theory in
the way that personality develops, instead it is looks to the more general perspective of human development and how individuals will function in their own environment (Anonymous, 2001) The
humanistic approach is also known as the Phenomenological Approach, to which there are several basic ideas, these are that every person will have a different perception of reality, that each
person will have a tenancy to actualise, and that there will be an in-built desire for the individual to grow and self actualise (Anonymous, 2001). These ideals are reflected
