multi-cultural practice (Pope-Davis et al., 2003). These authors identify three components in this type of counseling: "beliefs and attitudes, knowledge, and skills" (Pope-Davis et al., 2003, p. 6). Beliefs and
attitudes refers to the counselors own perceptions and mind-set about minorities (Pope-Davis et al., 2003). Knowledge refers to the counselors understanding of the world as well as their knowledge about
the different cultural groups they may work with (Pope-Davis et al., 2003). The counselors own value system plays a role in their knowledge, beliefs and attitudes. Skills are
the specific abilities the counselor needs to work with a diverse population. The counselors behaviors will reflect all of these components. We each tend to behave in ways that are
congruent with our attitudes, beliefs, and values. The counselors level of knowledge about counseling itself as well as about the backgrounds of clients will also affect how the counselor behaves.
2. Values Orientation A persons personal values cannot be turned off, like a faucet, but the counselor can learn to repress certain values if they are going to interfere
with the counseling process. If a counselor is in a situation where the conflict with personal values is too great, the ethical act is to refer the client to another
counselor. Counselors not only have their own set of personal values, they hold a set of professional values. Confidentiality is one of those values. The counselor must always protect the
clients confidences. To do otherwise is extremely unethical. The same thing is true for the clients safety. With children, this would include their physical safety, with adolescents and adults,
this has more to do with psychological and mental safety. Clients must feel safe, which means they must be able to feel trust in the counselor and respect for the
