ethical challenges in our personal lives or perhaps we are just not aware of them. A clerk gives you $10.00 too much, you find a wallet in the street, you
get home from shopping and find the cashier did not charge you for something. What we do in each of these little situations is based on our ethical code of
conduct. Sometimes our moral decisions have to do with convenience, for example, it is very convenient to tell the clerk she gave you too much change but it is not
convenient to return to the store with the extra item. If we say we believe in honesty and fairness but we fail to return that item to the store, we
are demonstrating that we know right from wrong but we are not committed to it all the time. Ethics has to do with action, not something we talk about. Ethics
is about how one should behave, ethics are universal standards by which we live. Ones code of ethics is founded on basic beliefs, many of which were developed in childhood.
Ethics are influenced by ones religious beliefs as well as by ones culture. My own set of ethics, for instance, is based on strong Christian beliefs. Values are our
beliefs and attitudes. Most of us have many different values and attitudes. Self-accountability is one value by which I try to live. It means that I take responsibility for what
I do, say or feel. This value dictates that what I do when no one is watching me is the same thing I do when there are a dozen witnesses.
This involves another value, honesty because in order to be self-accountable I must be honest with myself. Honesty incorporates truthfulness and having a sense of integrity. Integrity is about
