come. This is not to say that a person cannot evolve, but that their nature is always the same, no matter what happens to them throughout their life. But, sometimes
their inherent nature is disguised by their outward appearance, or their defense system. Such is the focus in the film "The Spitfire Grill." The people that we meet seem to
behave and believe a certain way. They seem stuck in their ways, or their defensive ways, and appear to be individuals who will not change or develop. In the following
paper we examine how two particular individuals, Percy and Hannah, slowly do change, ridding themselves of their protective devices and allowing themselves to grow and change for the better.
Percy The story we see unfold before us in the film is a story that revolves around the character that is Percy. "Percy arrives in the middle of a
winters night under the watchful eyes of the skeptical citizens of Gilead. They immediately begin to speculate on her background, with word of her criminal past spreading quickly" (Anonymous The
Spitfire Grill, 2002; spitfire). She is considered to be a tough young woman. She is bitter because of this reality, and is incredibly protective of herself and her past. This
is quite apparent in her remark that is intended to shut the whispering people in the Spitfire Grill up: "Hannah, did I forget to mention that I was just released
from a Maine correctional facility? And that I only went to solitary three times." This statement is a clear indication that Percy is angry, confused, fearful and essentially a
cold individual who will allow no other individual into her world. This is, however, just what we see on the outside. And, as would be expected by those around the
