finds that her sons friend appears to be a thief. What does this person do? Discussion The facts of this scenario are these: a parent, whom we will assume is
the mother since the prompt mentions jewelry, arrives home unexpectedly. She finds that the door to the house is ajar, and that her 16-year old sons friend is inside, going
through a kitchen drawer. He claims hes looking for pencil and paper to leave her son a note, but he smells of marijuana, and there is a lock-pick on the
counter, as well as the jewelry. She tells him to leave and he does. Now what? There are some contradictory things here. First, it seems clear that the boy broke
in since there is no other reasonable explanation for the lock-pick. It also seems clear that hes a thief, because the jewelry is lying on the counter; finally, the smell
of marijuana suggests that hes robbing the house to pay for drugs. But what is he doing in the drawer? It could be that he really does intend to leave
a note, which could lead to all kinds of speculation. Perhaps hes telling the son that he will repay the loss as soon as possible, or simply explaining what hes
done. Maybe hes bragging and inviting the son to join him in his next robbery. Or perhaps hes trying to apologize-or maybe hes looking for a bag to carry the
jewelry in. There is no way to know, but simply writing it out illustrates the flimsiness of the potential excuses. It seems that the logical thing to do is to
