This paper examines an essay written by a nurse about her experiences with accreditation, suggests ways to improve the essay, and finally provides a rewritten version. (The original essay is attached at the end of the paper.) Discussion The essay in general is well written. Its meaning is clear and the author makes transitions from one paragraph to the next smoothly. There is some confusion as to correct verb tenses as well as some awkward construction. Editing means going word by word but that will make this paper far too long. The first part will be suggestions for each paragraph; the second the rewritten essay. First paragraph: Literature describes hospital accreditation as the complex process of being officially recognized and in compliance with standard health care policies by health care organizations at the federal, state and community levels. For many years, my experience with hospital accreditation as a registered nurse has been at the bedside in preparing for the Joint Commission (TJC) and Department of Health (DHS) inspections. Throughout my nursing career, my manager would hold frequent meetings on making sure charting was complete and each staff member were knowledgeable of hospital standards and policies in preparation for TJC or DHS inspection. We always had to be ready to answer any questions raised by a JACHO or DHS surveyor. However, I never got that opportunity to meet a surveyor. Comments: The phrase "an in compliance with standard health care policies" is misplaced, making the sentence confusing. It should move to the end of the sentence; in addition, the sentence is too long. The second sentence is awkwardly constructed: "For many years" isnt necessary but "as a registered nurse" is important ...
