time, there was a heavy emphasis on psychoanalytic and behaviorist models of therapy. Rogers offered an alternative. It was revolutionary at the time. Rogers, in fact, was an early humanist.
Rogers said that the attitudes of the therapist were more important than anything else. He viewed humans in a positive light as being rational and capable of solving their own
problems. This essay discusses the basic concepts of this model of therapy. It explains the attitudes Rogers believed were critical to success in therapy. The essay also reports some ways
the therapist can apply the concepts and basic foundations of this model. Person-Centered Therapy Carl Rogers designed a model of therapy referred to as person-centered or client-centered
therapy. It is a non-directive model and was intended to offer an alternative to the growing popularity of psychoanalytic and behavioral models at the time. Person-centered therapy is based on
the belief that all humans strive for self-actualization. Arra (2010) explains this model as being "based on the ideas of self-empowerment, self-actualization, freedom, choices, values, purpose, meaning." It is a
positive way of looking at humans. Unlike Freud, Rogers believed that people are inherently good (Arra, 2010). He also believed that humans are rational thinking creatures and that they are
