in which the patient is typically analyzed as to their characteristics, abilities, issues and other personality traits so that counseling can center around a series of success-based goals. This
program uses the information to "develop support strategies designed to optimize a persons success" (Kennedy, Long et al, 161, 2001). Person-centered counseling will use a range of individuals within the
patients social environment to set up a series of actions which will result in a success or positive outcome for the focal person. It is this series of successful
encounters that will prove useful in dealing with the patients issues (Kennedy, Long et al 2001). These methods are used in many different types counseling arenas but are found
to be particularly useful with the adult patient that has an issue with abandonment in childhood. CHILDHOOD ABANDONMENT ISSUES The adult client with childhood abandonment issues continues to deal
with the fear of abandonment on different levels throughout their adulthood. Elderly nursing home patients are found to have abandonment issues as well when placed in an unknown environment
and surrounded by strangers. When family or friends are no longer around or no longer come to see them they typically exhibit behaviors that reflect back upon their fear
