First given a voice for the public by Rachel Carson in Silent Spring, growing awareness of the interconnectedness of all components of the biosphere eventually led to the abandonment of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, or DDT. Though naturalists cast farmers and chemical companies as evil entities bent on destroying the environment, it is more likely that those who resisted disallowance of DDT did so from ignorance; an inability or unwillingness to employ systems thinking; and failure to recognize that all of us share in the consequences - good or bad - of a single action that creates a ripple effect throughout the entire natural environment. Figure 1 provides a high-level view of the action and persistence of chlorine-based pesticides, most notably DDT. Figure 1.
