Roman Empire, which lasted nearly 1,500 years. Many of these leaders turned into martyrs like Augustus, Julius Caesar and Constantine. For example, two martyrs that will be discussed in this
paper are Perpetua and Origen. Each martyr was unique in their own right and they all had influences in the larger Greco-Roman world. They also responded differently to martyrdom and
persecution which was extremely prevalent during this time period. In addition, the circumstances and the way things were during the time of the Roman Empire also led them to respond
in certain ways to martyrdom and the persecution they endured. This essay will compare and contrast Perpetuas and Origens approaches to the Greco-Roman world while analyzing their responses to the
realities of martyrdom and persecution and explaining why they responded in the way they did. In the year 181, Vibia Perpetua was a 22-year old woman who had recently married
and just had a baby. She was a student of Christianity and she was arrested for civil disobedience for her religious beliefs by the emperor of the time, Septimus Severus,
who established a law prohibiting anyone from converting to Christianity or Judaism (Other Womens Voices, 2010). While sitting in a jail cell, she wrote of her experiences and spoke out
against the Emperor and the ways of the Roman Empire. She was executed in an arena probably during one of the Gladiator games. Her writing however was passed down through
