Berzon begins by acknowledging the fact that there is a need to reconsider the way gay and lesbian relationships are perceived and shift the focus of the social context
through which these relationships are defined. Because of the negative cultural and social manifestations of homosexuality in the modern society based on the social culture of the past, there
is a need to make concerted efforts to recontextualize these relationships in the modern era. Berzon does this not only to provide information about the changing nature of
gay and lesbian partnerships, but to validate the struggles of gays and lesbians and relate their social conflicts to their views of long-term partnerships. Berzon begins by recognizing the
need to reinvent gay and lesbian relationships in a manner that is more socially supported. Berzon provides a historical context through which an understanding of these relationships can be
derived. In fact, Berzon asserts that because homosexual relationships were not a part of normative culture in the recent past, there are assumptions about these relationships that should not
have stood the test of time. Because relationships and culturally-defined identities change over time, it is time to reinvent the gay and lesbian relationship in a manner that legitimizes
it in the modern culture. What must be recognized is that gay and lesbians seek out the same kind of long-term, lasting, and stable partnership that heterosexuals secure
through marriage. In the past, gays and lesbians have been defined by a kind of deviant social culture that was based in collective sexual activity, and Berzon argues that
