is known as the "laser pocket treatment procedure." In this procedure, "[C]hemical curettage is frequently done to de-epithelialize the inner pocket wall. The laser is then used to remove all
debris, vaporize bacteria, and do any necessary gingivoplasty. Scaling and root planing is done conventionally with curettes and ultrasonics" (Packman, 2000). When the procedure is complete there is very
little bleeding; patients can use Orabase "to cover any sore spots" and any subsequent discomfort can be alleviated with Motrin (Packman, 2000). Procedure Before the dentist performs any laser surgery,
he or she will perform a complete examination to determine if the patient is a good candidate for laser surgery (Packman, 2000). Laser surgery can sometimes be used when other
types of surgeries present risks; for example, people who are on blood thinners and cannot stop the medication will benefit from laser surgery (Packman, 2000). Likewise, those who have high
blood pressure and cannot take Epinephrine will do well with laser surgery, as will those who are hypersensitive to Epinephrine (Packman, 2000). In the case of someone who is hypersensitive
to Epinephrine, Novocaine can cause rapid heartbeat; the laser eliminates this, because Novocaine isnt necessary. The pocket treatment procedure has four steps: first, a probe is used to find out
how deep the pocket is (Packman, 2000). Next, the pocket will be "de-epithelialized" (tissue removed) with chemicals, after which the laser will be used to "vaporize bacteria, diseased tissue and
bacterial toxins" (Packman, 2000). The laser also removes the "inner pocket wall" (Packman, 2000). The third step is to use an "ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments" for scaling and root
planing"; and the final step is to use the laser, as needed, to control bleeding (Packman, 2000). Benefits/Disadvantages Dental lasers are very low-powered, and the treatment is exceptionally gentle and
