"Greek Lives" (as found in the Oxford Classics) that details much of the life and actions of Pericles we see how and why he was a powerful leader and politician.
The following paper examines how and why Pericles was considered to be such a leader as seen in Plutarchs work. Pericles In first understanding some of the nature of
Pericles, and thus seeing how his simple and noble demeanor had a great deal to do with his success as a leader, we see how one particular man, known to
many as Anaxagoras, or the Mind, gave Pericles much of his wisdom and learning. Plutarch states that, "Pericles was filled with unbounded admiration for this man and became saturated with
so-called high-flown speculation about celestial phenomena" (147). He became a wise and a very restrained individual that many considered perhaps to be haughty and above them. But, in one example
we see a story about how strong willed and noble Pericles could be, indicating his strength of character and how he must surely have stood as a very good example
for leadership qualities. In this story there was a man who he encountered in the streets while he was on some business. This man followed him, harassing him, calling
him names and just generally egging Pericles on. Pericles said nothing as this man followed him all around town until, upon reaching his home, when it was night, Pericles bid
his servants to light a light and show the man back to his home. Such strength of character is such that many men would follow for the mere strength demonstrated.
It is such attitude and demeanor that would allow Pericles to gain his power, and hold his power, over Athens. We also note that Pericles feared that many people would
