are being met so that the cardiac surgeon can concentrate on the actual procedure. The machine operated by the perfusionist continuously removes and returns the patients blood, essentially providing an
artificial organ for the duration of the surgery (What is perfusion, 2004). Professional literature on the current status and future of this medical profession suggests that, in addition to the
current tasks associated with the perfusionists role, in the near future these tasks will become increasingly more diversified than at present (Merkle, 2007). This is why Merkle (2007), in
regards to the perfusionists practicing in Germany, concluded that the training should be made broader than it is at the present. Likewise, Kim (2005) indicates that the training and certification
process for perfusionists in Korea should also be reconsidered and updated to reflect the importance and continuing evolvement of this vital medical profession. In regards to American perfusionists, there appears
to be a lack of empirical research regarding the adequacy of the certification process, as perceived by practicing perfusionists. How this compares to the objectives of the CEU curriculum
(the student researching this paper should note that this writer/tutor was unable to determine precisely what "CEU" refers to, so the writer assumed that this encompasses the current curriculum for
perfusionist education.) The current certification process, which is overseen by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP), consists of two parts. The first part of the exam process consists
of the Perfusion Basic Science Exam, which is a 220 item, multiple-choice text that is designed to evaluate the candidates basic knowledge of perfusion science (ABCP, 2008). The second part
of the certification process addresses the candidates knowledge of clinical applications in perfusion practice. This is also in a multiple-choice format, but the questions relate to specific clinical scenarios (ABCP,
