Discussion of these choices shows how the elements of mis-en-scene, that is, costumes, scenery, props, lighting effects, etc., keep the audiences focus squarely where the playwright intended, which is on the psychic development of a young girl who is a victim of childhood sex abuse. In terms of scenery, the stage is kept practically bare throughout the play. This is appropriate because the real "stage" is the protagonists perception, that is, the stage of her mind, which must be abstractly represented. The protagonist goes by the childhood appellation of "Lil Bit" and the play opens with her delivering a monologue while seated on some steps in front of two chairs. Behind her various members of her family stand ready to add their voices to her memories. In some scenes, a full moon hangs in a dark sky above an outdoor landscape, but for the most part, different situations and settings are represented by various arrangements of chairs. This artistic choice emphasizes the fact that the protagonist is giving the audience access to her memories, which subjective to her personal experience. The costumes are similarly kept simply, changing only in ways that are intended to aid the audience in understanding the context and identity of who is speaking. For example, in some scenes there is a girl dressed in a schoolgirls plaid uniform. While this writer/tutor cannot find sources to confirm this, it is my guess that she represents the protagonist as a child, versus the remembered memories of her adult persona who is clad in slacks and a blouse. If this perception is true, this costume choice would help the audience in identifying this aspect of the character.
