appraisals (Macky, 2008). The development of the concept goes beyond this, with the integrated model that was described by Armstrong and Baron as "a strategic and integrated approach to increasing
effectiveness of organizations by improving the performance of people who work in them and developing the capabilities of the team and individual contributors" (quoted Macky, 2008). This was further
defined by Armstrong as able to align the individual goals with the organizational goals (Macky, 2008). The concept is one that appears to have many potential benefits and while there
is the potential for employee support there is also the potential for employee and management resistance to performance management measures. Performance management
in general terms may be seen as the management of different aspects of the way the firm performs or operates. The way that different elements that are used to create
or support the creation of the goods or services need to be managed, this may be to ensure efficiency, to meet targets such as time, budget or quality, or to
abide by specific or determine standards. To manage something, whether it is the human elements of the workplace, the machinery or processes, data need to be gathered to measure
the performance that is being achieved which will then be measured against some type of benchmark. Benchmarks may be preset goals, past performance or benchmarks from other employees or companies.
Performance management has the potential to serve many functions, mainly maximising output and creating a productive workplace though the processes and outputs
that are part of performance management. But it may serve as a control, as a measurement to assess past performance and set goal, to help with projecting forward in terms
