like Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), who frequently experience high levels of readmission if they are not treated effectively in the hospital or if they do not adhere to medication regimens
after discharge. In order to lower the cost of healthcare and improve hospital performance, it is necessary to lower the overall cost of care, including reductions in readmission rates.
Priority of the PI Project Katz (2010) maintained that in 2007, $697 billion was spent on hospital care, more than 31 percent of all of the expenditures for health
care in this country. Hospital care costs are growing steadily, at a rate of approximately seven percent per year (Katz, 2010). Current research identifies the cost of care
and the quality of care to methods to reduce readmission rates for patients with CHF (Chen et al., 2010). There are large discrepancies in the costs reported by hospitals for
the treatment of CHF. The treatment of the typical patient with CHF can vary from $1,522 at the lowest-cost hospitals studied to over $18k for the highest cost hospitals
(Chen et al., 2010). Though cost-containment is frequently cited as a major impetus for determining the level of care and the expenditures for care, high costs were associated with
high quality of care scores and low mortality rates for patients with CHF (Chen et al., 2010). Hospitals with lower levels of expenditure demonstrated higher rates of readmission than
hospitals that expended more money for the care of CHF patients (Chen et al., 2010). Though expenditure is identified as a primary variable in relation to the quality and
reported level of satisfaction for care, it is evident from the existing literature that the quality of care is central to reducing readmission rates. As a result, evaluations of
