role in the type of evaluation the person receives. In the scenario presented, lower level managers are receiving low performance evaluations, despite the fact that they high client retention rates,
they bring in new business and their own subordinates are both satisfied and productive. The disparity in the evaluations between foreign and national managers clearly reveals a prejudice towards foreign-born
managers. The senior managers perception of foreign subordinates is skewed. Their perception of the job productivity of these people is skewed by their prejudice. The senior managers perceptions
involve stereotyping. Copeland (2003) said that stereotyping and believing the assumptions embedded in stereotypes do nothing but hurt everyone and may lie well-hidden in an individuals mental set. He also
said that managers need to be aware of the real cultural differences between foreign and domestic employees (Copeland, 2003). The senior managers need training in managing a diverse workforce. They
need to confront their stereotyping perceptions and change them. Multicultural training can help them achieve a different perception. The company is losing good managers because the senior managers are being
unfair. The foreign managers expectations are not being met, i.e., they expect to be rewarded for good performance but they are not. Expectancy motivation is discussed in the next section
as is the equity theory of motivation. In fact, the senior managers behaviors violate all three process theories of motivation explained in the next paragraphs. The process approach in motivation
emphasizes the reasons people make certain choices regarding their behaviors. The expectancy, equity and reinforcement theories are process theories. Expectancy theory has to do with employee expectations regarding the
consequences of good performance. Vroom said that people behave in certain ways because: they want to do a task successfully and they expect they can achieve that outcome and because
