A 15 page discussion of how the practice of veiling has varied over time and culture. The author contends that the Islamic custom of veiling is irrelevant to the central issue of women’s rights. To concentrate on this practice only results in a distraction from the real problems of women’s access to education and health care; the dire poverty which characterizes more and more Islamic families; practices such as honor killings and genital mutilation; and other real issues which need to be confronted regarded the rights of Islamic women. Islamic women often lead lives which are almost incomprehensible from a Western perspective. Indeed, from a Western perspective Islamic women
are viewed as the unfortunate long-term victims of the same patriarchal domination which has kept women in all cultures subdued throughout history. From this same perspective, however, the plight
of Islamic women somehow seems even more deplorable than that of women of any other culture. This perception is undoubtedly attributed to the visual nature of a womans plight
under the Islam culture, a nature which includes such overt differences as dress. Indeed, Westerners find numerous aspects of an Islamic womans life reprehensible. While some of these
perceptions are indeed valid, others are rooted more in ignorance than in an accurate assessment of the situation. The practice of veiling, for example, is one of the most
often criticized aspects of Islamic culture and one of the most emphasized when broaching the topic of the many injustices which have been heaped upon Islamic women for centuries.
This emphasis, however, all too often detracts from the real issues of womens rights under Islamic law. To understand the relative impact of
veiling upon Islamic women we must delve into the culture, religion and politics of Islam. Islam is an ideology and religion which has taken the world as if by
wild fire. It is actually a young religion in comparison to Judaism and Christianity but it is one in which societal need and the circumstances of time provided the
