from the Latin percepio. There are numerous ways used to study perception, including biological or physiological, psychological, empirical, and philosophical. As we go through our daily routines, we
create models of how the world works. The models are like a scientists hypothesis, i.e., yet to be proven. We may shift our models or interpretations based on new information
(Capriola, 2012). Ambiguous models can have many different perceptual interpretations. If new information has no frame of reference in a persons mind they may not perceive it at all.
One of the controversies related to perception is the explanation of the process of how physical energy received by sense organs form the basis of a perceptual experience. Two
major theories address this issue: top-down processing, an indirect theory, and bottom-up processing, a direct theory. Top-down refers to the use of contextual information in pattern recognition. Bottom-up begins
with the stimulus itself and how it is carried along the visual pathway (Capriola, 2012). Top-down theory says we must have some sort of prior knowledge and
past experience for a perpetual process to take place. Bottom-up theories argue there is enough information in our world that we do not need past experience for a new perpetual
experience (Capriola, 2012). These examples deal with visual perception but they also relate to auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile perception. It would be difficult to function with only one type
of perception because the world always presents multi-sensory stimuli. 2. Emotions Dictionaries define emotions as states of mind that emerge from ones circumstances, and feelings but emotions are
much more complex than that simple definition. There has long been a debate between and among psychologists and philosophers about the nature of emotions - what is happiness? What is
