Background PepsiCo is an international firm with a diverse range of interests. The foundations of the firm are seen in 1898 when Caleb Bradham, with the creation of a drink
called Pepsi. In 1902 he registered the trademark and founded the Pepsi-Cola Company. The recipe was obtained by Charles Guth following the bankruptcy of the firm in 1931, the
ownership changed hands again in 1941 following a court case where ownership passed to Loft Inc., who changed their name to Pepsi Cola Company. The expansion of the firm
started in the 1960.s with a related diversification, including the development of Diet Pepsi. Expansion continued and following a merger with Frito-Lay in 1965 with the post merger company renamed
PepsiCo. The company has made a large number of acquisitions as well as deferments over the years. Today the firm, which has sales in more than 200 countries, has brands
that may be divided into five categories (PepsiCo, 2012). The Pepsi Cola brands include Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Lipton and Ocean Spray (PepsiCo, 2012). The Frito-Lay brands include not only Frito-lay,
