Inc. by K. Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction Bus Stop by Penelope Lively is a delightful and moving short story that
provide real insight into human motivation in the space of a very few words. This paper analyses the story. Discussion Where and when does it take place? The story takes
place in London, on a bus. The time is uncertain; that is, its not possible to determine an exact year but its obviously modern day, with groups of Scandinavians, Middle
Easterners and giggling French tourists hopping on and off the bus. This would not have been the case until fairly recently so its logical to assume it takes place about
the time it was written, 1989. Whos involved and whats going on? The story is about George and his sister-in-law Milly. They encounter one another when she gets on his
bus; hes the bus conductor. For people who havent been to London, the description is accurate: the driver sits in a separate compartment while the conductor moves through the rest
of the vehicle collecting fares, announcing the stops, and keeping order. Whats going on is that Milly, who is a snob, is encountering George for the first time in
quite a long time, apparently. She has no idea that hes working as a bus conductor and it offends her deeply. She is a class-conscious, judgmental and somewhat ridiculous woman
who is wearing a "furry" jacket; Lively has a lot of fun with that jacket, describing Milly as "befurred" at one point (p. 263). Throughout the story, all Milly can
