to alleviate that stress. Stem cell transplant operations are extremely demanding procedures that involve preparatory chemotherapy or radiation (or both), followed by the actual transplantation of the cells (Manne, et
al, 2004). The cells may come either from a donor (allogeneic transplantation) or from the patient (autologous transplantation) (Manne, et al, 2004). The treatment is a "first-line therapy"
for life-threatening illnesses and although advances in the procedure and supportive care have improved survival rates, the transplant still carries with a significant risk (Manne, et al, 2004). As
might be expected, the fear, distress and depression felt by family members whose child is facing such an operation are considerable. In some cases, parents with a child
