there diagnosis before reaching school-age is exceptionally difficult as there are no medical tests which state that asthma either definitively exists or definitively does not exist. Diagnosis however is a real concern as there are many risks if a child is not diagnosed. These risks include medical complications and sometimes even death can result from a major asthma attack. Additionally, the condition can worsen if it is not treated and/or lead to complications such as lung infections, decreased lung capacity, etc. Therefore, diagnosis is important and doctors need to be aware of symptoms and monitor patients carefully. When a child presents symptoms both parents and medical personnel should watch carefully to try and determine the cause. Often, the problem is that doctors wait to diagnose and in the meantime symptoms worsen until an asthmatic attack is the means of diagnosis but also puts the childs health at risk. While asthma is a diagnosis of elimination, it is an important one nonetheless. In terms of treatments, there are many new promising medications and treatments on the horizon. Currently, the most effective would be inhaled corticosteroids. These work very well on pre-school and school aged children alike and the negative side effects are negligible according to studies which have been conducted.
