The vast majority of the population?four-fifths of the population-- were the rural people who lived in villages on lay and ecclesiastical lands. Their lives differed greatly from those of the nobility and were characterized by a number of factors. First of all, the rural peasantry could be divided into two main groups?free and non-free (Riche 101). Free peasants were under oath to the king, whom they owed military service (Riche 101). They could travel as they pleased throughout the Empire and marry as they pleased (Riche101). Those who were not free had no rights. Their marriages could be dissolved, and they, or their children, could be sold. In all things, their master acted for them (Riche 101). In other words, slavery was still a thriving institution, having been stimulated by wars of conquest (Riche 101). Because historians have tended to focus their endeavors n sources that came primarily from the classic lay and ecclesiastical domains north of the Loire, they have also tended to overlook the fact that there was a middle-class of free, land-owning peasants in the western and southern portions of France (Riche 102). These rural people lived in a wide variety of conditions and circumstances, ranging from small proprietors through tenants to day laborers (Riche 102). Tenants were obligated to pay rents either in silver or in kind and had to perform certain services on the lords reserve or face the loss of their land (Riche 105). They sent pieces of silver, or poultry or small animals to the court in payment for their use of the land. They also had to deliver certain manufactured goods such as stakes, tools, boards, or pieces of cloth (Riche 105).
