S. Buck, although not widely read today, is considered to be "One of the most popular American authors of her day" as well as a "humanitarian, crusader for womens rights,
editor of Asia magazine" and "philanthropist" (Books and Writers). While many feel she is outdated, as an author, one cannot argue that she is outdated as a powerful and important
figure in literary and social history. She was a woman who experienced many changes in the world, through both World Wars and other wars, a woman who recognized injustice, and
a woman who saw sexual and racial injustice. She was an independent thinker/woman and someone who was privy to cultural experiences as she lived in China and the United States.
She was, in many ways, a woman ahead of her times in relationship to her perspective and insight. The following paper examines her independent nature and her unique position in
