of the 20th century. It is a story of Miriam, Pearl Maiden, whose life takes many twists and turns. It is something of a historical novel and something of an
adventure and love story. The following paper provides a report of the novel. Pearl Maiden Miriam is born and her mother baptizes her: "When the water was brought
she dipped her trembling hand into it, and made the sign of the Cross upon the babes forehead, baptising her with the name of Miriam, after that of her own
mother, to the service and the company of Jesus the Christ" (Haggard Chapter IV). Her mother then tells a woman, Nou, that the child will forever be a Christian and
that the child now belongs to Nou because she knows she is dying. Nou is a servant woman and Miriam grows up in a very strong and loving community of
Essenes. As she grew she was essentially loved by all, though an orphan, and had many men who adored her and she called them all "father." Eventually she was educated
as was their way, and she took to learning quite readily and eagerly. She grew and learned and then was taught how to sculpt "in the clay of the Jordan"
(Haggard Chapter VI). She also began to learn of her religion and "Thus wisdom, earthly and divine, was gathered in Miriams heart till very soon its light began to shine
through her eyes and face, making them ever more tender and beautiful" (Haggard Chapter VI). As the story evolves Miriam becomes a
woman and falls in love with Marcus, who is a Roman officer and thus is not of her faith, thus causing her great conflict. At the same time a boy/man
