The reasons nation enter into warfare are on the one hand diverse. On the other hand, however, they most often relate to one degree or another to
those nations interest in guarding their own welfare. World War II illustrates this contention quite well. Even Japan, the nation that as Americans we typically consider the aggressor
that inspired our involvement in that war, was actually guarding against threats the US represented to her. At the same time, however, there were many ethical reasons this war
was fought. War is one of the more unfortunate reflections of the human species. Many times it is the winner of an
altercation who writes history and it therefore becomes the winners prerogative to record the history with details that they are most comfortable with (Parshall, 2010). This has certainly been
the case in regard to World War II. Events and actions which were considered atrocious by the loser are most often considered victories or necessities of war by the
victor (Parshall, 2010). Often, in fact, there are complete misrepresentation of motive and event (Parshall, 2010)! Despite the varying viewpoints which are inherent in any reflection on an
event or action, most would agree that there are basic criteria that can be used to gauge the appropriateness of a nations decision to wage war.
