many items that small grocers simply have no room to display. Yet, a relatively new service that makes use of the Internet is online grocery shopping. One example of a
site that provides this service is called Peapod. Peapod is a company that started in the late 1980s and has become a leading Internet grocer ("Peapod," 2009). It is a
subsidiary of Royal Ahold, an international food provider ("Peapod," 2009). Royal Ahold owns firms like Giant Food and Stop & Shop ("Peapod," 2009). In fact, Stop & Shop customers can
link their previous grocery purchases to the Peapod site, which is a helpful way to make ordering decisions. Peapod is a unique and helpful service that is facilitated with
the use of the Internet. While people may do online shopping, the food shopping is typically a weekly excursion into the big markets, but with services like Peapod, consumers can
easily shop at home. Peapod has grown a great deal since its inception, but one has to wonder how the company makes a profit. After all, Peapod provides food
at the same prices as "in store" markets and the service costs the company money. There is gas needed for the delivery trucks and the people who help gather and
pack the items must be paid. The overhead items do add up. What seems to be the case is that these sorts of firms make money by sheer volume. That
is, someone who might purchase their food and sundries elsewhere may vie for Peapod for the sake of convenience. Hence, Peapod gets customers that might have gone to Kroger or
the A&P. Further, the food store makes money on the sales. Each item is somewhat profitable even if the delivery fee is minimal. McConnon (2008) explains: "Peapod, an online grocer
