Please Introduction James Peales Still Life: Balsam Apple and Vegetables (1820s) and Paul Gauguins Still Life with Teapot and Fruit (1896) are clearly both still life
paintings but they are also rather different as well. This is largely due to the fact that the two painters are from different periods in history and their style was
different. In the case of Peale he "was an early American portrait and still life painter (Art Experts, 2010). As such his style was generally very realistic. In the case
of Gauguin his style changed quite a bit. He was heavily influenced by Impressionists and then he slowly "broke away from Impressionism and adopted a bolder style - radical simplifications
of drawing, brilliant, pure, bright colors, an ornamental character of composition, and deliberate flatness of planes, the style, which he called synthetic symbolism" (Olgas Gallery, 2010). They both utilize a
powerful sense of lighting and line in the works to be examined, and they also use relatively bold colors, although the style and tone of the paintings is different. The
