Clearly, the writer writes about what he knows. He begins by explaining what he will do in the book. Paz remarks: "My thoughts are not concerned with the total population of our country, but rather with a specific group made up of those who are conscious of themselves, for one reason or another, as Mexicans" (11). What this author does is describe various aspects of what it is like to be Mexican. This book above all provides a look at the culture in which the people live. What Paz manages to do is to hone in on various aspects of what it is like to be Mexican, inclusive of but not limited to the fact that some Mexicans are ashamed of who they are (13). Throughout the various chapters, the author focuses on different things. He notes that for example, the Mexican sees life as equated with combat (Paz 31). It is interesting that he would use this terminology. Yet, the author does view various aspects of daily life through the Mexican persona. There is a decided point of view and this is given a great deal of attention. In the end, it is thought that the Mexican male possesses a sense of machismo (Paz 31). Throughout the work, various observations are made, which provides the reader a sense of who the Mexicans are. The book is not completely related to the way that Mexicans think, although that sense does take up a large portion of the work. Yet, most of the book does address specific issues. For example, one chapter is entitled The Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is actually a holiday that is thought to provide spirits-people who are dead-with a chance to revisit the living.
