strongly against such payment. Discussion There are many voices on both sides of this issue, but one problem needs to be resolved: are athletes going to school to
play ball or get an education? Until there is some consensus about this basic issue, problems will continue to mount with regard to paying athletes. Students who are
in school to learn will no doubt complain that its not fair to pay some students and not others, since the putative reason for everyones presence on campus is to
learn. But the athletes and others will complain that coaches, as well as the schools and universities themselves, earn a lot of money from the athletes efforts while the
players get nothing. According to one source, "[M]any coaches, players, alumni, and athletic directors agree that paying athletes while attending school is necessary"; at least a stipend (Vera).
(A stipend is usually a token payment.) Both the general public and fans also seem to be leaning toward the idea of paying the players (Vera). However,
there are many issues that have to be resolved before this takes place; two of them are scholarships and the status of paid athletes with regard to the university they
attend (Vera). Finally, "some analysts believe student-athletes should receive payment because they do not receive a quality education or enough preparation for the real world" (Vera.) Lets look at
that last statement first, because its so outrageous. It goes back to the question posed above, are these people in college to learn something or to play football?
If colleges expect to turn out people who are well-prepared for life after graduation, then they have every right to expect that the athletes will keep up with their course
