This can be considered by looking at the position of a cashier. There are different approaches that may be used to assess a salary for a position on the basis of a job. One of the simplest is a ranking system. In this there would be the use of grades which were based in the jobs rank; this should be based on the organizational hierarchy (Belcher, 1996). When looking at most retail firms hierarchy a cashiers job is usually the lowest level, so this would be a starting grade. The grade itself Will usually give a wage or salary band, this will then be applied to the individual job, for example, cashiers who undertake training and support for the new cashiers may have an enhancement, even if they are in the same band. A degree of flexibility would also allow the firm some degree of discretion to reward personal performance and create a hybrid scheme. An alterative approach is to adopt a points system based on the tasks of a particular job, in this case a cashier. A points system will look at the different requirements needed for jobs, the points may be awarded for the level of education or qualifications needed to carry out a job, this could also include professional qualifications, and possible professional organization membership if needed, the level of experience needed and the level of initiative and integrity that is required to be part of the job (Henderson and Clarke, 1994) .
