Paul has already explained his own background and the importance he had formerly placed on his adherence to the Jewish faith. As Phillips notes, he is at pains to point out the degree of fanaticism and zeal which he had brought to bear on his attempts to persecute and destroy the early Christians (2000, PG). He freely admits the strength of his beliefs in the old cultural traditions of Judaism, and the enthusiasm with which he celebrated his former faith. In order to emphasise that his conversion was not the result of any communication with other human beings, or of academic study and rational decision, he describes how little discourse he has had with other Christians and the way in which his conversion has come about as a direct revelation from God, rather than by any social or educational influence on his way of thinking. In this way, he is establishing a basic parameter from which to discourse on the difference between the physical signs of participation in a religious group, such as tattooing or circumcision or other deliberate modification of the body, and the commonality of belief and purpose which arises from the individuals acceptance of the divinity of Christ.
