Within this chaos, Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus, laid claim to divinely appointed authority, indicating that he had been charged by the Holy Spirit to universalize the message of
Christ and bring it to all people, even those who were not Jewish. Paul taught that message of Christ transcended the societal and cultural distinctions between people, as he
wrote in Galatians 3:28 that "There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, male and female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Buell, 2004). Additionally, in
his epistle to the Galatians, Paul dealt with the most controversial issue of his era, which was whether or not Gentiles who converted to Christianity needed also to convert to
Judaism, that is, the big question of the day was whether or not Gentile should follow the law of Moses and follow Jewish dietary laws and become undergo circumcision (Buell,
2004). Paul argued that Gentile did not have to abandon their cultural background and adopt Jewish law, as he argued that the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ constituted a new
covenant between God and humanity, a covenant that was the fulfillment of prophecy but also one that included all of humanity. This was a radical proposition and this issue
dominates Pauls thinking in Galatians, which is where he expresses his deep concern over how many people in that congregation have been persuaded to become proselytes to the Jewish faith
