He lives in a world, in reality, wherein people think he is nothing short of an arrogant and insulting man who believes all others are beneath him while he is
really from less than wealthy people. He is a complex man and his story is complex and intriguing as well. The following paper examines various symbolic and intriguing elements concerning
this story. Pauls Case by Willa Cather Towards the beginning of the story Paul is found whistling a song from Faust,
the opera. Faust was originally a character created by Goethe and the "grand opera" is loosely based on this story. Faust was a man who was not happy with is
own life and who essentially was willing to sell his soul for more. In the opera he is a man who seeks much of the same as Paul. He wants
a grand life filled with glamour and life, although also a man who has attempted suicide. It is the story of a man willing to ultimately, and symbolically, sell his
soul to the devil for what he desires. This relates well to Paul for he is a man who will do anything to live, if even only for a week
or so, as a grand man and he ultimately kills himself when his grand life is over. In the story Paul lives
