between the life he wants and the life he must lead. This paper analyzes Pauls character and describes the authors message. Paul Paul is a high school student, and seems overly sophisticated for his years. He is physically unattractive but has a veneer of worldliness that his teachers find unsettling. For instance, when he is called to the principals office, he wears a red carnation in his buttonhole (Cather). This is not something we would expect from a high schooler; neither is his attitude, which is contemptuous of his teachers, his father, and indeed his entire life. We learn that the only time Paul really feels alive is when hes at his job as an usher at Carnegie Hall, or when hes hanging out with members of a stock company (Cather). Were told that Paul has no desire to become an actor or performer, but he feels alive in their company. It seems to him that they live the life he would like to have: they are free, larger than life, and perhaps slightly improper. They are free to come and go as they please and he finds this freedom immensely attractive: "It was ... true that he was not stagestruck-not, at any rate, in the usual acceptation of that expression. He had no desire to become an actor, any more than he had to become a musician. He felt no necessity to do any of these things; what he wanted was to see, to be in the atmosphere, float on the wave of it, to be carried out, blue league after blue league, away from everything" (Cather).
